Lausanne is the capital and the biggest city of the canton of Vaud, situated on the shore of Lake Geneva. The setting of Lausanne is very picturesque – it lays on three hills and is surrounded by vineyards and Lake Geneva on one side. The attractive old town, dominated by the impressive Gothic cathedral, is largely car-free. Small alleyways with cafes and boutiques shape the streetscape in the medieval city centre. Lausanne is often referred to as the Olympic capital, since it hosts the International Olympic Committee. Sports, culture and nature are given high profile in Lausanne.

Lausanne is at the crossroads of two of the main motorways of Switzerland as well as two main rail lines. It is 63 km from Geneva airport (about 50 minutes by train), or 2h30" from the Zurich or Basel airports.
